CM Announces Annual Award in the Name of ‘Suraj’ to Encourage Organ Donation

Suraj, who saved lives of six persons after death, has become an inspiring story for millions in Odisha.  His name is now going to be immortalised as Chief Minister Shri Naveen Patnaik today announced to institute an annual award in his name.

Suraj, was a resident of Bhanjanagar in Ganjam district and was working in Surat.  He lost his life after facing an unfortunate fatal road accident on October 29.  After struggling for about 5-6 days in hospital, he was declared brain dead on November 2 by the doctors.  His parents were contacted by a local NGO.  They decided to donate his organs to save lives of others. Accordingly, his Heart, Liver, two Kidneys and both the Eyes were transplanted to save lives of six persons.

His Heart was carried by plane to Fortis Hospital in Mumbai and was transplanted in the body of a woman. Both his Kidneys and the Liver were transplanted into three persons in Ahamadabad and the two Eyes went to two persons in Surat.

Suraj’s father Babuli Sethi and mother Gitanjali Sethi today met Chief Minister Shri Naveen Patnaik at Lok Seva Bhawan today.  The Chief Minister highly appreciated their noble act and said, this will be an exemplary inspiration to society.  The Chief Minister announced a homestead land and Biju Pucca Ghar for them.  He also announced an assistance of Rs.5 lakh from CMRF as a  recognition for their inspiring humane act.
